What doesTick infestation in dog means?

It is quite common to hear about the external parasite namely ticks in the Kathmandu now a days and it has a great concern among the dog owner about the health of the dog. What is tick? Tick are a group of blood sucking arachnid parasite. Arachnid are eight legged animal that are distinct from, though related to, insect. In other words arachnid( tick)are not insect. Both insects and arachnids belongs to larger animal group, the arthropod. Tick have eight legs and vary in size from 1 mm to 1 cm long. It’s size increases after gorging blood from Dog’s body. Adult ticks look a bit like small spider Ticks are common in woodland, grassland and heath area, but can also be found in your garden. They live at ground level, and are stimulated into activity by triggers such as heat, motion, vibration, or shadow. Once it has climbed into a host( in this case dog) a tick insert it head through the skin and feeds, gorging itself with blood. Tick are active throughout the year but most likely to come across between spring and autumn. They can climb or drop on to your do coat but they don’t fly or jump like mosquitoes and flea. Tick can be found in nearly every part of the world and survive a wide range of climate. An interesting fact: Tick can breed only when they are feeding. Why tick are considered dangerous to dogs? Though tick bite cause mild irritation to skin but they suck enough blood from the body and if the number of tick is high then there is a chance of anemia ( less amount of blood)in the body. However the most concerned aspect of tick bite is the transmission of disease like Lyme disease( can transmit to human),Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Erlichiosis Canis(E. Canis) Anaplasmosis, Bebesiosis. Most tick borne disease aren’t transmitted immediately, so if we get off tick from your dog’s body within 24 to 36 hours of tick bite, he is unlikely to get infected. In other word you have to keep your dog tick free and if it appears anyway you should remove it immediately by using proper method. From this you can save your dog from tick borne deadly diseases.

How is the life cycle of tick completed?

Hard tick have four stage life cycle. These stages are egg, six legged larva, eight legged nymph and adult . Usually, each of the last three stages has to feed on host, such as dog to proceed to next stage. Most of the ticks life is spent sitting on the blade of grass or leaf waiting for the suitable host to pass by. The life cycle complete in following way, a female tick lays thousand of eggs and then dies. Larvae hatch from the eggs a few week later, feed( if they can find a host) and grows into nymph over a period of 2-3 weeks. The same pattern is repeated for transformation from nymph to adult. How to find the tick in Dog’s body and remove it manually? Finding ticks in your Dog’s body is not a easy job. You run your hand along the dog’s head, back and belly and still find no tick and you think you’re dog is tick free. But it isn’t. After carefully running your hand in dog’s body and watching the skin beneath the hair you may find a lump which is in fact a tick engorged by sucking blood.
